IM Spas Spasov (1944-2025)

With deep sorrow we announce that on August 4, 2025, exactly a month before his 81nd birthday, after a long and serious illness, one of the most prominent figures and competitors of our correspondence chess - IM Spas Spasov passed away.
He was born on September 4, 1944 in Omurtag. Spas Spasov dedicated his life to the game of chess, establishing himself not only as a very active competitor with numerous awards, but also as an active organizer and advocate of correspondence chess in Bulgaria. His passion for the game, analytical mind and uncompromising dedication made him a respected figure, both among competitors and the chess community.
He joined correspondence chess in the 1960s. For his time, he was the most active competitor. Winner and Bulgarian Champion in
F/32, as well as in F/22, he shared 1st-2nd place. IM of ICCF. While he was an active competitor, he participated in all team championships. He participated in many international tournaments, bilateral meetings of national teams, semi-finals of the ICCF Olympiads and European Championships. Very active figure of the Union of Bulgarian Correspondence Chess Players and Bulgarian Correspondence Chess Federation, their long-time secretary. Honorary member of the Bulgarian Correspondence Chess Federation/Bulgarian Correspondence Chess Association.
The loss of Mr. Spasov is a huge loss for Bulgarian chess and cultural life, and his memory will remain forever in all who had the honor of knowing him.
