The silence is the oddest part.
I can see a statement from ICCF that Med was detained for an immigration inquiry or a political issue, one would expect it to be cast as an injustice and considered brief. Of course then a good show of support would be to NOT start posting how he would be replaced. So is it serious or just unknown? At least it hasn't hit any big news (or chess news sites) yet.

Hi Ken,
There has been no announcement about an immigration inquiry or a political issue, what has been announced is that it has not been possible to obtain any information about the reasons for the detention. The ICCF Executive Board have repeatedly expressed their strong support both for Med and for keeping the chess community informed, any further news will be reported as soon as we can. |

Michael, I do not know if I confused the issue with some language or if you read my post as not being a response to several earlier ones. Perhaps I also was responding to some posts only at TCCMB, that would be my fault. My point was that it was ridiculous to speculate that ICCF didn't want to announce what exactly had happened because it was political in nature; several posters have gone so far as to complain of politically-motivated misconduct from the Spanish police! It seemed obvious to me that ICCF not releasing information was NOT what was happening. I am certain we will hear more when it is known. Best, Ken |

You must be seeing blind if you couldn't guess immediately that this was a power abuse and made him a political prisoner. If it were only for immigration problems (hardly conceivable for a European citizen in a country that has signed the Schengen treaty!) he was stopped at the airport already. In the mean-time two Spanish papers have confirmed his apprehension and the very reason for it: Algeria wants him extradited for the same reason why he got political asylum in Germany. If you only would remember how this Algerian government got into power in the 1990 years (declared the elections won by the FIS party invalid and subsequently made the FIS illegal) then you might realise what kind of dirty game the Spanish police has played here. Just read (and translate) the following two Spanish papers of today. Best wishes, Wim Quote:
